The Democratic party's US presidential candidate Barack Obama said he would launch military action against al-Qaeda in Pakistan without the consent of Musharraf's government. He Obama gave a speech to outline his foreign policy positions.

The Pakistan's foreign ministry however said that any threat to act against al-Qaeda from within its territory should not be used for political point scoring. Mr Obama's main Democratic rival, Senator Hillary Clinton, described him earlier this month, as "naive" on foreign policy. The attack from Hillary Clinton came after a television debate between Democrat presidential candidates.

During the debate Barak Obama said he would meet leaders of countires such as Cuba, North Korea and Iran. In his speech Mr. Obama said Pakistan's president, General Musharraf must do more to prevent any future terrorist activities in his country. Obama warned that any Pakistani failure to fight terrorism would risk an American troop invasion and the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars of US aid.

"It was a terrible mistake to fail to act when we had a chance to take out an al-Qaeda leadership meeting in 2005. If we have actionable intelligence about high-value terrorist targets and President Musharraf won't act, we will," said Obama.

The spokeswoman of Pakistani foreign ministry, Tasnim Aslam has told the AFP news agency that any messages about overseas military action are a serious matter and presidential candidates must act more responsibil".

White House spokesman Tony Snow has responded to Obama by saying that Pakistan's leadership works hard to fight al-Qaeda and Taleban guerillas within its borders. Gen Musharraf has been an US ally in "war on terror" since the 11 September 2001.

Barack Obama criticize the foreign policy of Bush's administration. He said that focus on al-Qaeda in Iraq is wrong and that US President George W. Bush is "confused" with the mission.
